UnPrepared. A community United for early childhood success.

Children. They are fun, energetic, outspoken, and sometimes a lot to handle. They can make you want to pull your hair out! However, they can also teach you valuable lessons and make you appreciate the little joys in life. But above all, they are our future. They will be running this world when we are too old to move, so why not give them all the tools they need to succeed?

Getting a Head Start:

Have you ever come home from work to see your child covered in marker, scribbling all over the walls? This is actually good for them! Not the drawing on the walls part, but the scribbling. Encouraging scribbling can actually lead to learning how to write earlier in life.Macintosh HD:Users:shanemillard:Desktop:kid-draws-on-dog-pens-wall-markers-1416711778d.jpgEnsuring children get an education early on is key to their long-term success. Early learning positively effects brain structure by improving kids’ cognitive, emotional, social, and personal development. This means that by simply receiving an early education, it can make a substantial difference in mental and physical maturity. More specifically, early childhood education can increase one's math and language abilities, improve and strengthen interactions with peers, and increase lifelong earning potential. On the other hand, children who do not get an education before kindergarten are substantially less likely to succeed. These “at risk” children are 25% more likely to drop out of high school, 40% more likely to become a teen parent, 60% more likely to not go to college, and 70% more likely to be arrested for a violent crime. It is astonishing how important early development is to success in life.

Making a Difference:

Foothills United Way understands the importance of early childhood development.   90% of brain development takes place before the age of five, yet most public realms are not concerned until children reach kindergarten. To some families, helping their child get an early education may be a challenge. This may be due to lack of finances for schooling, or parents may be working several jobs and don’t have time to help their child in the right way. Foothills United Way acknowledges these challenges, and is actively convening with  a promising group of collaborative organizations, government agencies and schools to create a program that will help children succeed in all aspects in life including education and health. Early childhood education is key in shaping our future.   We believe working TOGETHER is the most effective way to get there so that our children can make a success of themselves, and also the world around them.
